Historic Victorian Classic

8883 Sam Snead Highway, Hot Springs, Virginia

NEW PRICE: $775,000

Located just one mile north of the village of Hot Springs stands a stately Victorian home,  historically known as "Ilahee".

"Ilahee" (left) in about 1902.  At right is the Dr. Henry Pole family at their Valley View home taken in the late 1890's.

Built in 1899 by Dr. Henry S. Pole, a well known physician in Bath County, Virginia, he named the home "Ilahee", an American Indian word which means "high earth or ground". With an unusual exuberance of details and elements, the irregular plan is typical, however the main stairwell has several landings and runs in several different directions.  The house has unusual projections, turrets, bay windows, and a verandah which extends around most of the house.  The interior has been somewhat altered, although six of the eight fireplace mantels remain. Dr. Pole was a natural physician and through the many years he practiced, he acquired an extensive knowledge of spa treatments which was unequaled. This was especially appropriate due to the home's proximity to the hot and warm running mineral springs located nearby.

In 1928, the property was sold to A. E. Dudley.  At this time it became known as "Manor Terrace".  During the ownership of the Dudleys, "Manor Terrace" was used for many different purposes including a restaurant, rooming house, barber house and leather shop.  It was best known for its restaurant which was a favorite eating place for many.  James J. Brady purchased the property in 1974 from Constance Pruester, who had owned it since 1965, during which time it was a family dwelling.  This was home for the "Brady Family" for several years until his work took them away from Bath County to Tennessee.

Present owners, Liz and Richard King, discovered the property while on vacation in July, 1987 and have restored the property and expanded it resulting in the ultimate family getaway.

As currently configured, the home on 2.845 acres contains in excess of 6,000 square feet of living space on three floors. There are a total of 7 bedrooms, 5 full baths and 1 half bath. The guest cottage at the rear provides an additional bedroom and bath with kitchen and living room.

This home is connected to county water and sewer. Primary heat is provided by an oil fired furnace circulating hot water through radiators throughout the home. For backup heat, there are a total of 5 fireplaces, two of which are propane gas logs. Fuel tanks include a 295 gallon propane gas and a 550 gallon oil tank. Air conditioning is provided by window units which are included. There is a partial, unfinished basement with concrete slab and stone foundation walls providing generous storage area. Annual Real Estate taxes are $3,573.

Rear Guest Cottage

At the rear of the main house, the old original ice-house has been converted into a 450 sq. ft. guest retreat with one bedroom, a private full bath, a living area and kitchenette.
